FAQ's
General Product Questions
What is gain value, and why is it important for projector screens?
Projector screen gain measures how effectively a screen reflects projected light back to the viewer compared to a standard matt white surface with a gain of 1.0. A higher gain value reflects more light, producing a brighter image, while a lower gain value provides a wider viewing angle and more consistent image brightness across the room.
Gain is important because it directly affects image brightness, viewing angles, and overall viewing quality. The ideal gain depends on factors such as ambient light levels, projector brightness, screen size, and audience seating arrangement. Choosing the right gain helps ensure optimal image clarity and a comfortable viewing experience for all viewers.
What are the pros and cons of high gain screens?
High gain screens produce brighter images and perform well in rooms with ambient light. However, they have a narrower viewing angle, meaning image quality is best when viewed directly in front of the screen and may decrease for viewers seated to the side.
What are the pros and cons of low gain screens?
Low gain screens provide wider viewing angles and more even light distribution, making them ideal for larger audiences and indoor environments. However, they produce a dimmer image, making them less suitable for bright rooms or outdoor use where higher brightness and contrast are needed.
Does a higher gain always mean a better image?
No, a higher gain projector screen doesn't automatically guarantee a better image quality. While it can provide a brighter image from certain angles, it may result in diminished brightness from other perspectives. Higher gain screens typically have a smaller viewing angle.
How do I determine the ideal gain for my projector screen?
The standard gain for a projector screen is 1.0, which ensures equal brightness from all sides and is visible from multiple angles. However, the ideal gain depends on the viewer's preferences and the specific environment. Other factors to consider are ambient light conditions, projector specifications and distance from the screen surface.
What is the gain value of Smarter Surfaces ALR projection paint?
The gain value for Ambient Light Rejecting screen paint is 0.71 @ 90°
Application & Usage
How To Use Ambient Light Rejection Projector Screen Paint?
Once applied to your wall, the Ambient Light Rejection Projector Screen Paint is ready for use as a projection surface after 24 hours, once the surface is fully dry. Simply set up your projector as needed and aim towards the painted wall. We recommend ensuring your projector is calibrated correctly. Check the application guide for details.
What type of projectors can be used with ALR screen paint?
ALR Screen is suitable for use with projectors above 2000 lumens.
Surface Prep & Priming
What surfaces can Ambient Light Rejecting Projector Screen Paint be applied to?
Ambient Light Rejecting Projector Screen Paint is suitable for use on plaster, wallboards, wood, metal, concrete, and composites, effectively any smooth surface. It can also be applied to fabrics and is suitable for painting or refurbishing old screens, but not suitable for roll-up screens. It is mainly for interior use only; for exterior use, see the outdoor projection paint.
Do I need to prime the surface before applying Projector Paints?
We recommend applying ALR screen paint onto a previously primed or painted surface. Prime bare, untreated surfaces with one coat of White Primer.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How do I remove the ALR paint from my skin?
In case of contact with skin, rinse skin with warm soapy water.
What do I do if I spill the ambient light rejecting paint?
Ambient Light Rejecting paint is water based so it can be cleaned using water.
How can I clean my ALR screen?
Ideally with compressed air which can be purchased in aerosol format or dab your surface slightly damp with warm water cloth.
Functionality & Performance
Does the Ambient Light Rejecting screen paint work with blended projections?
Yes, Ambient Light Rejecting Screen Paint can be used for blended projections. It is designed to provide the colour accuracy, uniform brightness, and light diffusion needed to create smooth transitions between multiple projected images, helping deliver a seamless and immersive display.
For large-scale projection surfaces, it also removes the need for expensive physical screens, offering a more flexible and cost-effective solution. This allows multiple projections to blend on a single surface while maintaining image quality and consistency.
Does the ALR screen paint work well with both 2D and 3D Projectors?
Our entire range of paints is compatible with both 2D and 3D projectors, ensuring optimal performance regardless of the projection mode. When projecting a 3D image onto the paint, it seamlessly delivers the intended effect, creating an immersive viewing experience when paired with 3D glasses.
How is ALR Screen Paint Polarity Preserving?
3D projectors work by projecting two slightly different images which overlap on the screen. These images are passed through special optical filters which results in the light being polarised in a different way for each of the projections. When you view the two images through special 3D glasses, each lens blocks one of the images, meaning that your left eye sees one image and your right eye the other image.
It's therefore really important that the projection screen you use does not change the polarity of the light if you are using a 3D projector. All of the paint products are "polarity preserving" which means that the image you see will be exactly the same polarity as is intended, preserving the full 3D effect.
Why are the Projection Paints Acoustically Transparent?
Smarter Surfaces Projection Paints are acoustically transparent because they do not affect the sound absorption performance of the surface they are applied to. Testing on a 12mm gypsum board showed identical Sound Absorption Coefficient (SAC) values before and after painting (α = 0.04 - 0.07), confirming that sound can pass through the painted surface without any measurable impact on acoustic performance.
How does ambient light rejecting screen paint work?
This innovative Ambient Light Rejecting Projection Screen Paint uses unique pigment particle technology to scatter ambient light ingress from the horizontal plane which protects the projected light beam by reducing light interference.
Safety & Environmental
Is ALR Paint safe to use and can be applied around people?
Yes, ALR Paint is completely safe to use and apply around adults and children. It is a very low VOC, low odour, solvent-free product that is free from PFOA, PFOS, and isocyanates. ALR Paint meets high environmental standards and has been independently certified for fire performance and VOC emissions. As with any paint product, we recommend wearing gloves during application.

ALR paint is 100% free of Isocyanates and solvents. Unlike some poorer quality products on the market we do not use isocyanates in the ALR paint or any of Smarter Surfaces products which is a hazardous product and should only be used by trained professionals using rigorous safety procedures.
What personal protective equipment should I use when painting?
Use the gloves supplied in the kit while applying ALR paint. In addition, safety glasses should be worn. As with any painting process, ensure the room is ventilated.
Is ALR paint flammable?
ALR paint is not flammable and is certified for fire performance, making it certified for use in schools and offices. ALR paint has a very high flashpoint above 158 degrees Fahrenheit.
