FAQ's
General Product Questions
What is whiteboard paint?
Whiteboard paint is a high performance dry erase coating that can be applied to smooth surfaces such as walls or desks, transforming them into functional whiteboard surfaces that can be used with any normal whiteboard marker. Smarter Surfaces whiteboard paint is a two component paint that when mixed together creates a dry erase surface where you can write, draw, and erase with dry erase markers.
What’s the best whiteboard paint?
When choosing the best whiteboard paint, consider the surface and how you will use the product. Also look into whether you require additional functions like magnetism, projection, matt surface, white surface, or clear surface.
Does whiteboard paint work?
Yes, Smarter Surfaces whiteboard paint is designed to provide a smooth, erasable surface where you can write and erase with dry erase markers, and comes with a 10 year guarantee. Proper application will ensure optimal performance.
Are there different colors of dry erase board paint available?
Dry Erase Paint is available in a white finish or a clear (transparent) finish. The clear finish allows you to retain the original color or graphics on your wall and benefit from whiteboard functionality.
Application & Usage
Can you use Magnetic Paint as a base product?
Yes, we recommend using our Super Magnetic Paint or our Magnetic Plaster. For a rapidly installed magnetic and writable surface, choose our Magnetic Whiteboard Wallpaper instead. You can combine various products to get better results.
Can you paint over whiteboard paint?
In most cases, yes, you can paint over whiteboard paint. However, it's important to ensure proper adhesion and compatibility between the existing whiteboard paint and the new paint.
Is the white whiteboard paint magnetic?
No, the standard white whiteboard paint is not magnetic on its own. However, Smarter Surfaces offer a magnetic whiteboard paint. This product is designed so the surface is both magnetic and writable.
What roller should you use to paint white Dry Erase Paint with?
Dry Erase Paint kit is supplied with a roller designed to be used with Whiteboard Paint. For best results, apply paint using a mohair or lint free short pile roller sleeve. If you are using a mohair roller, remove all loose fibres before use. A tip for this is to wrap masking tape around the roller to remove any loose fibres.
Can I use permanent markers, and how do I remove them?
No. Like any whiteboard, dry erase paint is not compatible with permanent markers. If a permanent marker is used by mistake, write over it with a whiteboard marker to re-wet the ink, wait two minutes, then wipe off. If that doesn't work, use Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover, a specialised cleaner for permanent marker, stubborn stains and ghosting.
Can White Whiteboard Paint be applied on any surface?
Yes, White Whiteboard Paint can be applied to almost any smooth surface (glass, metal, concrete, wood, etc.). If you are using Whiteboard Paint – Clear over an existing colored surface, we recommend you use our Clear Primer for best performance. If you are using Whiteboard Paint – White, it is essential to prime the surface first with White Primer or any good quality water-based white primer.
Whiteboard Paint Clear can be applied over any color, except for white as it may tinge the wall. For best results use Whiteboard Paint White over a white surface.
Can you paint a whiteboard?
Yes, you can paint a dry erase board or a whiteboard using whiteboard paint. Smarter Surfaces Whiteboard Paint allows you to transform almost any smooth surface into a functional whiteboard, expanding your options for creating collaborative spaces. Simply clean the whiteboard, apply one coat of White Primer and then apply one coat of whiteboard paint.
For refurbishing old whiteboards or chalkboards consider our Self Adhesive Whiteboard Films for fast installation.
Can you paint glass with whiteboard paint?
Yes, for a whiteboard finish on glass apply Smarter Surfaces Primer first. For a transparent finish, apply Whiteboard Paint Clear directly to the glass, or for a standard whiteboard finish apply Whiteboard Paint. Alternatively consider our Self Adhesive Whiteboard Films which can be applied directly to glass.
Can you use dry erase paint on wood?
Yes. Ensure that the surface is smooth before application. Fill any holes with a filler. Apply White Primer before applying Whiteboard Paint White (or apply Clear Primer before applying Whiteboard Paint Clear). Sand after each coat of primer and re-apply primer as required.
Can you use whiteboard paint on wallpaper?
Yes, painting over wallpaper is possible. You can apply Whiteboard Paint over smooth wallpaper only. Do not apply over a textured wallpaper. For a white finish, apply 2 coats of Whiteboard Primer. For a clear finish, use 2 coats of Clear Primer if the wallpaper is porous.
Can whiteboard paint be used outside?
Yes. Our product has been tested to withstand temperatures up to minus 16 degrees celsius and is UV light (ultraviolet) resistant. However, the area should be sheltered and dry to ensure best performance. Please note Whiteboard Paint should not be stored for an extended period of time below zero.
Can you paint onto the floor using White Whiteboard Paint?
White Whiteboard Paint has not been tested for slip resistance and as with any painted finish it could wear according to the traffic on it. Our performance guarantee is as a dry erase paint and does not extend beyond that.
Can you paint an existing whiteboard with Dry erase wall coating?
Dry erase wall coating is an ideal whiteboard repair product for most surfaces. It can be applied directly onto existing whiteboards after applying White Primer (please note a primer is necessary before the paint application), just ensure all marker residue has been removed.
For blackboards, we recommend you wipe the surface down with a damp cloth to remove any old chalk. Next, coat the blackboard with White Primer and complete it with dry erase board paint.
Surface Prep & Priming
Why should I apply primer before applying Whiteboard Paint?
A primer helps give a surface a smooth finish. Secondly, they act to ‘seal’ a surface. This means that when you apply Whiteboard Paint on a surface that has been primed, the properties within our whiteboard paint will stay on the wall rather than being absorbed into the wall. In summary, using a primer or sealer means you will get a smoother surface with optimum write-on-wipe-off functionality.
What type of heater can be used to speed up the primer’s drying process? Can an infrared lamp be used?
A normal fan heater can be used to speed up the drying process. An infrared lamp can also be used but it can’t be placed too close to the surface.
Functionality & Performance
Will the walls turn yellow in sunlight?
Whiteboard writable wall Paint can be used in hot climates all over the world including the Middle East and Australia. It has UV resistance properties which means that interior surfaces with Whiteboard Paint will not yellow, even in the hottest conditions.
Can you use white whiteboard paint as a projector screen?
White whiteboard paint can be used as a projector surface with short throw projectors although it was not designed for this purpose. Many of our education and business customers use Whiteboard Paint as a projection surface (as well as a whiteboard surface). For a better quality projection surface, please use one of our projection screen solutions specifically designed for projection.
Will there be a reflection?
If you notice a ‘hotspot’ on the surface, simply re-angle your projector to eliminate it. If you require a high-performance projector surface we recommend using one of our Projector Paints. If you are looking for a surface with both projector and whiteboard functionalities, choose our Projector Whiteboard Wallpaper.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How do I clean my whiteboard surface and remove stains?
Wipe the surface with a dry or slightly damp cloth, or use a standard whiteboard cleaning spray. For the first 30 days after application, clean daily with the supplied microfibre cloth; after that, a thorough weekly clean is enough. For tough stains, ghosting or marks a dry eraser won't lift, use Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover on the affected area only (not for daily cleaning).
How do I remove the whiteboard paint from my skin?
There are two ways you can remove whiteboard paint from skin. The first option is to mix salt into warm water and rinse your hands with the solution. The second option is to use a premade material called sand soap which can be purchased in any good car parts store.
What do I do if I spill the whiteboard paint?
Whiteboard paint can be cleaned with any Xylene based cleaner. This can be easily found in DIY or motor stores. Please note, this is not suitable for removing Whiteboard Paint from skin.
What causes shadows or marks on my whiteboard surface, and how do I fix them?
Shadows or marks are usually caused by improper application or by stretching the paint over an area larger than the kit covers. Each kit is formulated to cover the exact area specified. Always follow the application guide and use the right kit size. To fix existing marks, use Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover on the affected areas (not for daily cleaning). For further help, email a photo, your order number and the total surface size in square metres to support@smartersurfaces.ae.
Can I use alcohol to clean my White Whiteboard Paint surface?
Yes, you can use it once in a while. Continued use of alcohol on Whiteboard Paint may deteriorate the integrity of your surface and reduce performance. We have designed our range of cleaning solutions to provide the best cleaning results while maintaining the quality you expect from your Surface.
Safety & Environmental
Is whiteboard paint safe to use around people?

It is independently certified for Fire performance, LEED, M1, VOC and Indoor Air Comfort, making it safe to apply around adults and children.
